At the Shanghai Motor Show 2011, Volvo Car Corporation displayed a masterpiece of Scandinavian design car buyers to your liking.
Volvo Concept universe is a large luxury sedan with a new human-centered design, language that honors the beautiful lines of classic Volvo models.
"The concept of the universe, Volvo offers the world a taste of what people can expect from our next high-level sedan," said Stefan Jacoby, president and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.
Volvo Car Corporation's long-term strategy has been successful, truly global company, whose products have been designed around the needs of our customers' and lifestyle.
Scandinavian design is about understanding and caring people. Volvo Car Corporation aims to be the brand that best interprets what car buyers want to contemporary luxury.
The concept of Volvo universe was designed for an unconscious desire and a sense of timeless beauty.
It moves toward the future of its coupe-like roof, and a modern, full-back, but also echoes the legacy of Volvo design cues borrowed from classic designs of the past.
"Like many luxury items, this design feels in their hands and durable enough to withstand the test of time," said Peter Horbury, vice president of design at Volvo Car Corporation. "We will compete with the best of our special brand of Scandinavian design. It is unmatched in performance and technology, but without superficiality or complications."
User-driven and pure
Within the concept of the universe has a Volvo, comfortable and cultivated, which is also driven by users and refreshingly uncomplicated. Is your controller forward and comfortably relaxed on the back.
The environment the pilot flying intuitive controls and a touchscreen that is close at hand when the driver came to her - all operated in a venue that is inspired by the ultra-comfortable chairs.
Rear seat passengers are embraced by pure comfort. Indoor mold in the back seat and becomes part of the seats environment.
A sense of dynamics and dark-colored front seat of the world vanishes without interruption until it becomes all light back seat paradise of tranquility. Volvo Concept Universe is full of classic shapes, materials and textures, with a special touch to create a modern and luxurious.
"Volvo Universe Concept is exceptionally refined, but with all assets simplistic, making the Volvo Champions of the complication. There is a growing understanding of this brilliant mix of design and technology between the modern luxury car buyers. This trend paves the way for our success. We believe that our particular brand of luxury has a great future, "said Peter Horbury ends.
"Our goal is to be the brand that understands better what buyers want modern luxury car. We are anxious to hear what the most demanding customers in view of China, this luxurious concept. Later, we show design in Europe and the United States to bring the whole world that we are all models of cars, "said Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO, Volvo Car Corporation.
Volvo presented a prototype electric car ready in September 2009. Volvo C30 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), which is now exhibited at the Salon of 2010 North American International Auto in Detroit he took a new step in the development process. It is equipped with an interior that is both complete and full instrumentation, and battery conditioning improved.
"The first prototype has allowed us to identify the main technological challenges, such as packaging of the battery and safety issues. We solved these problems without compromising the Volvo C30 is cool and fun to drive personality. I am very pleased with the outcome. Electricity Volvo C30 BEV in Detroit is a much more complete product, "explains Lennart Stegland, director of Volvo Cars Special Vehicles.
The next step in 2010 is a series of factory-built test cars. Selected users will run the test fleet for a trial period of two years to provide Volvo Cars with valuable experience. Not only technically but also in behavior.
The Swedish Energy Agency supports the project by contributing SEK 150 million towards its funding.
Valuable data on the field
A pure electric car has different characteristics compared to a car with a combustion engine. Now experts from Volvo will be able to study how users respond to these differences.
"Our data on the test fleet will be of great value for Volvo Cars of developing electric cars. It will also provide crucial information for planning of infrastructure and help define the services needed to make rechargeable cars can choose the most attractive in the future, "says Lennart Stegland.
New tools and graphics
E-C30, Volvo C30 looks like a normal, and offers exactly the same safety, comfort and capacity than other models. The most obvious difference inside the car are new tools in front of the driver. Monitor and the graphics are a little 'different from a traditional Volvo. A cool and easy to use screens of the instrument, in principle, only the speed and power consumption. But there are also a number of new symbols, such as the battery meter and other relevant information of this type of vehicle.
Driving experience is also a different class than a conventional car. Electric Volvo C30 BEV does not have the speed and the engine power is delivered smoothly, with full power available immediately. "Sailing along almost without sound is a very special experience. The power is there immediately. We need to spend a lot of time to evaluate the transmission system, which is both comfortable and safe for the driver to manage and use the same capacity battery optimally at different speeds ", says Lennart Stegland.
Adjust C30 - all the fun, but without the emissions
The electric motor uses about one fourth as much energy as the engine of fossil fuels. This great interest in the energy efficiency of electric vehicles increases in fuel prices and requirements for low CO2 emissions of more stringent.
Volvo C30 shown in Detroit powered by a lithium-ion battery, which can be downloaded via a standard household outlet, or along the road special charging stations. Charge the battery fully takes about eight hours. If the car is recharged with renewable electricity, CO2 emissions could be almost zero well-to-wheel perspective.
Top speed with a fully charged battery is about 130 km / h (81 mph). Acceleration from 0 to 60 km / h in under 11 seconds. Range of the car is 150 km (94 miles). This covers the needs of commuting more than 90 percent of all motorists in Europe.
Like all other Volvos
The electric motor is installed under the hood when the batteries (24 kWh) is mounted on the drive shaft tunnel and the space normally occupied by the fuel tank, and from outside the passenger compartment deformation zones.
"Moreover, they are well encapsulated and the structure around them has been strengthened. Electric vehicles are another interesting challenge in our commitment to building the safest cars in the world. An electric-powered Volvo should be as safe as any other new Volvo. These same standards also apply to the ownership, operation and protection in an accident, "says Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor, Volvo Cars.
Market Outlook for Electricity
When it comes to the only power cars, there are several factors that determine their use in the future. "Consumers must feel that this type of car is attractive both to drive and own. That's why electric cars should be as comfortable and safe and offer the same kind of results that cars with alternative energy sources, "says Paul Gustavsson, director of the electrification strategy at Volvo Cars, we believe in this technology, and our field test to demonstrate that electric cars have a significant market potential. "However, by offering a car is not attractive enough. It is also necessary in the first place is a system of grants to do. Electric car battery technology is affordable to expensive car buyers, we hope that the authorities and the rest of the Volvo Cars will follow in our "Drive to Zero". - Volvo Cars journey to zero emissions "
The 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Volvo Cars is unveiling the Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid - almost ready for emissions of carbon dioxide production of the car less than 50 g / km. The plug-in hybrid, which will be launched in 2012, is the result of close cooperation between Volvo and the Swedish energy company Vattenfall.
"No one sector or organization can tackle the climate challenge alone. Our mission is to develop a carbon-lean car, but a sustainable future must be created with the whole society. This project shows how collaboration between experts in different sectors, we bring you closer to the transition from individual thin carbon products are time-smart lifestyle, "said Stefan Jacoby, president and CEO of Volvo Cars.
In January 2007, Volvo Cars and Vattenfall has launched an industry association, whose objective was to test and develop the technology for plug-in. The cross border initiative led to the creation of a jointly owned company - Association V2 plug-in hybrid vehicles
Half of all CO2 emissions, driving pleasure Full
Development work was jointly funded. Now the project is about to introduce the plug-in market first diesel hybrid. This is an attractive type of car that gives the user access to the best properties of both an electric car and a vehicle diesel fuel consumption and low CO2 levels, combined with a long range and high performance .
". An important aspect of the project was to keep Volvo V60 driving pleasure exceptionally high standard of safety and comfort luxury Simultaneously, the average CO2 emissions and fuel consumption will be reduced by half compared to what is available on the market TODAY "Today," said Stefan Jacoby, adding:
"We take a giant step closer to" Go Zero "vision, ie the search for zero emissions. In fact, the Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid is run solely on electricity and recharged using renewable energy sources, we have already achieved this. "
Fuel costs less
When powered solely by electricity, the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid has a range of up to 50 km. The range of cars that operate a total of 1200 km. Emissions of carbon dioxide will be an average of 49 grams per km (European combined cycle) and fuel consumption of 1.9 liters per 100 km.
The cost of the battery means that the plug-in hybrid will be more expensive to buy a Volvo V60 with a conventional combustion engine. In addition, fuel costs will be one third compared to a conventional combustion engine. The operating cost of electricity in Sweden is estimated at about $ 2.50 for every 10 km. The exact price varies from one market to another.
The hybrid plug-in can be downloaded from the power of common household electricity while parked at home or somewhere else. The charging time is about five hours, if the car is loaded at home.
The electricity has many advantages
Electrification of the transport sector is an important step in combating climate change. Electricity is a very beneficial fuel:
An electric motor is almost four times more efficient than the normal combustion engine. This means that an electric car consumes less energy and therefore produce fewer emissions, despite being fed a mixture of sources, including electricity from fossil fuels.
European electricity production emissions. This means that even if all vehicles were electric, electricity production in itself does not produce carbon dioxide. This output is gradually lowered over time.
Electricity is an excellent source of energy. Not to be missed, and can be produced with virtually no CO2 emissions. For example, Vattenfall is working to reduce emissions to half of the company in 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050.
Emissions from exhaust million is transferred to a small number of plants that are easier to control and operate on the basis of the exchange of EU emissions, something that does not apply to transport today.
Electric cars use relatively little power and increased consumption will more than offset by the ambitious expansion plans for renewable energy throughout Europe. Wind power a simple example, produces enough renewable energy to power 3,000 electric vehicles. Vattenfall will offer buyers of plug-in hybrid is a contract, including electricity from renewable sources.
The rapid expansion of renewable electricity generation
Electricity production is growing rapidly. Wind energy is widely marketed and continues to grow, biofuel will replace fossil fuels on a broad front, wave energy is expected to enter commercial service within ten years, and new technologies to capture emissions of CO2 from coal power plants are currently under development.
Volvo, the work progresses, the Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid in parallel with the development of the Volvo C30 Electric, which runs entirely on electricity.
"These two types of cars are complementary. Plug-in hybrid vehicle driver is completely independent of the load points when driving long distances. The future of electric-car market, both with an all-electric cars and plug-in hybrids," said Stefan Jacoby.
The third stage of the electrification strategy of Volvo Cars is the empowerment of new-generation engine with hybrid technology.

Technically sanctioned by Volvo, the S90 was thought up by Nouphone J. Bansasine while studying at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center.
With a more aggressive nose and its fastback roof line, the slippery 4-door coupe would be a very welcome successor to the oh-so-bland S80. Something like the S90 could help Volvo reinvent itself as truly stylish, mid-range luxury in order to tackle the world.
With the new S60 sedan already poised to fight the 3-Series, a car providing CLS looks at an E-Class price is definitely going to be necessary for Volvo to keep its momentum going.
Volvo Cars North America LLC is set to release its first (and arguably most important) vehicle since the brand was picked up by Chinese Geely: the 2011 S60 saloon. Barring any unforeseen problems (like the recent crash-mitigation ordeal), it should be picking up right where its forebear left off: trying to reinforce Volvo's entry in the mid-size sport-sedan market.
Coming in at a starting point of $38,550 ($37,700 plus $850 for destination charges), the new S60 hopes to pull in buyers from the mainstays. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Lexus? Volvo wants to take them down to China Town.
It's probably a PR's worst nightmare - having something going completely wrong at a press event. And that's exactly what happened to Volvo at the media presentation of the firm's new S60 saloon in Sweden this week.
See, the Swedes wanted to show journalists how the 2011 S60 sedan's new 'Collision Warning with Auto Brake' system works in action, so they catapulted a test car out of a tunnel at around 35km/h towards a parked truck.
Volvo says this about the system: "Volvo's new Collision Warning with Auto Brake automatically brakes the car if there is an imminent risk of a collision with a moving or stationary vehicle. The system starts by alerting the driver and preparing the braking system for emergency braking. If the driver does not respond despite the warning, the brakes are applied automatically."
For the 2011 model year, Volvo is introducing a new five-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo diesel that will be available throughout its range while the Swedish automaker also upgraded the six-cylinder petrol engines offered on the S80, V70, XC70 and XC60.
The new five-cylinder diesel unit is in principle the same engine as the 2.4-litre diesel, but its displacement has been reduced (with a shorter stroke) to 2.0-liters. It will be offered in three different variants in terms of output.
Commercial truck design is not something one would normally think of when discussing vehicles. Sure, there are times driving down the interstate when you think, "How is that aerodynamic?", but usually such thoughts are relegated to the "not worth discussing zone". Now that that's out of the way, let's talk truck design.
Designer Patrik Palovaara says, "It's true that truck design is largely about rational factors like aerodynamics and ergonomics. But there's also an emotional dimension. The truck's appearance is strongly linked to both its function and its identity and, by extension, to its brand."

More background of the Volvo XC90:
Launch
The Volvo XC90 was launched in early 2002 as the first purpose-built SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) to come from Volvo Cars. It is also Volvo's first seven-seat car since the 1940s. The Volvo XC90 has electronically controlled All-Wheel Drive. It has the capacity to forge ahead on very poor roads, but is primarily intended as a spacious passenger car with excellent driving manners, immense safety and intelligent versatility.

Design
Five-door SUV - a crossover model that combines the passenger car's comfort and comfort with excellent get-you-there ability and flexibility. The Volvo XC90 is designed to give a robust yet at the same time compact and elegant impression. It is built as a 7-seater passenger car, with a unitary body and the same type of chassis as that found in Volvo's sedan models - unlike some other SUV models that are built on a truck chassis. The passenger compartment is very spacious, thanks not least to Volvo's modern powertrain concept with transverse engine installation.
The Volvo brand name in the rear of the XC90 D5 adopts the new widespread lettering to enhance visibility of the brand. The individual letters will also be larger.
Safety
Volvo Cars adopts a holistic view of safety that encompasses both Preventive and Protective safety. Preventive safety is closely linked to the car's driving properties. The body of the Volvo XC90 features immense torsional rigidity and the car has a sturdy chassis, a combination that results in consistent, predictable behaviour on the road. Ground clearance is high to offer good get-you-there ability on poor roads. Despite this, the floor is set low down, which contributes to the car's low centre of gravity and excellent directional stability.
Protective safety in the Volvo XC90 is structured around a network consisting of exterior and interior safety systems that interact with one another to reduce the risk of occupant injury in a collision.
The exterior systems have the task of distributing and absorbing incoming collision forces so that the passenger compartment remains as intact and undamaged as possible.
Thanks to its unitary body, the Volvo XC90 has been able to be built with the same type of deformation zone as Volvo's other car models. The body is built in the form of a metal cage where all the components interact with one another to ensure controlled deformation. A gently rounded front and an extra beam below the front bumper help reduce the risk of injury to other road users.
The interior safety systems aim to keep the passengers securely in place and also to reduce the risk of serious injury. In order to provide the most effective protection possible, Volvo Cars has developed a number of in-house systems, such as WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) and IC (Inflatable Curtain). All are fitted as standard in the Volvo XC90. Certain components have undergone further development specifically for the XC90 model. For instance, the Inflatable Curtain has been extended so it also covers passengers in the third row of seats. All seven seats are equipped with three-point inertia-reel seat belts, belt pre-tensioners and head restraints. The highest possible safety requires that all the car's occupants always use their seat belts.
The Volvo XC90 features reinforced roll-over protection. An active stability-enhancement system (Roll Stability Control) activates if the car risks rolling over. Engine power is reduced, anti-roll bar stiffness is increased and the brakes are automatically applied to stabilise the car. If the car should roll over, a network of beams in the body structure helps distribute and absorb the resulting forces. In addition, an electronic sensor registers if the car is about to roll over and accordingly activates the seat belt pre-tensioners and the inflatable curtains.
Driveline and handling
The Volvo XC90 D5 is equipped with a five-cylinder engine. It is fitted transversely in keeping with Volvo's modern powertrain concept. They are designed to operate smoothly, with low vibration and high torque across a wide rev range.
The engine is extremely compact and mounted transversely, for optimum crash safety and maximum cabin space. The five-cylinder turbo diesel provides smooth and powerful driving. This responsive and modern diesel features a service-free particle filter, making it a highly eco-efficient engine.
The chassis, with spring struts at the front and Multilink axle at the rear, is set up for stable, reassuring driving manners and alert steering response. The Multilink rear axle is an independent rear suspension system featuring a number of links and it is designed to offer a good combination of controlled wheel movements and high ride comfort. Some of these links have the task of providing a certain degree of anti-skid steering effect. A long wheelbase and wide track, together with a very torsionally rigid body, contribute to the predictable, controlled driving manners. Large wheels with a relatively tall tyre profile and stiff tyre sidewalls contribute further to stability.
The Volvo XC90 has Volvo's electronically controlled All-Wheel Drive system with Instant Traction, for fast and effective distribution of traction even when moving off on a slippery surface. Volvo's advanced DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) stability-enhancing system is fitted as standard. DSTC cuts in and helps stabilise the car if it registers any tendency to skid.
The environment
The Volvo XC90 is designed and equipped to impact as little as possible on the global environment and to offer a clean and healthy interior climate. Energy-efficient diesel engines with particle filters produce low emissions of carbon dioxide and soot particles.
Volvo's IAQS (Interior Air Quality System) effectively reduces the amount of particles, pollen, gases and certain unpleasant odours in the air entering the cabin. In addition, all textiles and leather are certified under KO-TEX 100, an international standard, which ensures that the interior trim is free from allergy-inducing substances and emissions.
Volvo has released the first photos of its freshest new model: the all-new 2009 Volvo XC60. "This is not only the safest Volvo ever - it's also the most stunning," says Volvo Cars President and CEO Fredrik Arp. The new XC60 will debut at the Geneva Motor Show on March 4, 2008. Its U.S. launch following shortly thereafter; the first quarter of 2009.

Volvos' new XC60 crossover steps boldly into what is the motoring world's toughest and fastest-growing segment - the "Small Premium Utility". This car is charged with more emotive form and more energy than any other Volvo," says Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin. "We're elevating our design DNA to an entirely new level by literally turning up the visual volume. If you say that you'd recognise a Volvo from 300 feet away today, I dare say the XC60 radiates a clear Volvo presence from at least twice that distance."
A variety of intelligent safety systems are another important part of the XC60's special character. The big news is City Safety - a unique system that can help the driver avoid or reduce the effects of the type of low-speed impacts that are common in city traffic. If the car is about to drive into the vehicle in front and the driver does not react, the car automatically applies the brakes.
"Volvo is the first in the world to offer this type of feature as standard," says Arp. "City Safety clearly signals that the new XC60 is the safest car Volvo has ever produced. The car is packed with our accumulated safety know-how and technology, both when it comes to preventing accidents and protecting all the occupants in a collision."
The new XC60 will be launched in the U.S. with only one standard engine: the powerful turbocharged T6, which produces 281 horsepower. All Wheel Drive (AWD) with Instant Traction is fitted as standard. The global sales target for the new XC60 is 50,000 units per year. The five largest markets during the peak year 2010 are expected to be the USA (15,000 - 20,000 units annually), Germany, Great Britain, Russia and China.
The Volvo XC60 will be built at the Volvo Cars factory in Ghent, Belgium. Sales will start in Europe during Q3 2008, while sales in North America are targeted to begin in early 2009.
